In this blog I'm going to answer some of the most common questions I get surrounding Hypnotherapy in regards to cost. We'll look at the average Hypnotherapy fees within the UK, why it can be so expensive to get a good Hypnotherapist, and what to do if you're ready to take the next step.

How do I get started, and How much do Hypnotherapy sessions cost in the UK?

How you get started will vary with every Hypnotherapist you meet, so first I'm going to run through the process I use. I find it provides transparency and gives you all the necessary information before committing to going ahead with sessions.

The first step is a free, no-obligation initial consultation so we can discuss your unique situation and make sure we're a good fit. This is a really important part of the process, because it allows you to know whether we can work together happily to resolve your presenting issues.

Important - not every Hypnotherapist will be the right fit for you! Some therapists may try to downplay this fact, but it should not be overlooked. You need to feel like you could have a therapeutic relationship* and be confident that your Hypnotherapist can help you to change the issues you want to work on... that might not be me, and that's OK!

(*A therapeutic relationship is the connection and trust between a client and their therapist. It's a professional partnership where the therapist provides a safe, non-judgmental space for the client to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.)

Here is the simple process I use:

  1. Book your free consultation. You'll be taken to a brief form to fill out.

  2. Receive pricing information. Once you submit the form, you will immediately receive an email detailing my hypnotherapy packages and pricing.

  3. Confirm your booking. I will then personally get in touch within two working days to confirm your Initial Consultation time.

This ensures that when we connect for our call, you already have all the information you need, and we can focus entirely on you and your goals.

Do you offer single sessions?

Again, this is something that will differ between Hypnotherapists. I, personally, do not offer single sessions. I made this choice on the back of my experience and professional training. Here are the reasons that I only offer a 5-session package, rather than individual sessions:

1. Hypnotherapy is a Process, Not a One-Time Fix

While a single session can provide some relief, it's rarely enough to create a deep, permanent shift in thinking, behaviour and subconscious patterns. Hypnotherapy works by reinforcing new, positive suggestions over time. A 5-session package allows us to build on each session, cementing new beliefs and habits so that the change is long-lasting.

Smoking Cessation Hypnotherapy is sometimes offered as a one-time session. My practice is focused on helping clients achieve lasting change in areas such as anxiety, stress, and phobias. For this reason, I do not offer smoking cessation hypnotherapy.

2. It Allows Us to Build Trust and Rapport

A strong therapeutic relationship is crucial for successful hypnotherapy. Over a series of sessions, we build trust and rapport, which is essential for you to feel completely safe and open to the process. This relationship allows for a more personalised and effective experience than a one-off meeting could provide.

3. It's a Commitment to Your Success

When you commit to a 5-session package, you are making a powerful statement to yourself that you are serious about solving your problem. This commitment is often the biggest catalyst for change. As your hypnotherapist, it also allows me to be fully invested in your outcome, knowing that we have the necessary time to work through the issue completely.

4. We Can Tailor Each Session to Your Progress

Your journey is unique. A package gives us the flexibility to adapt each session based on your progress. We can dive deeper into specific issues as they arise and adjust our approach to ensure we are always moving towards your goals in the most effective way possible.

Ultimately, my policy is based on my experience of what delivers the best results for my clients. A 5-session package is an investment in a lasting solution, not a quick fix.

Hypnotherapy sessions can vary in price, but it's important to have an idea up-front so you can plan effectively.

How much does Hypnotherapy cost in the UK?

How much do Hypnotherapy sessions cost? Well, as of the time of writing (August 2025), the average cost of Hypnotherapy in the UK is £80 per session. While this is the average, you'll find sessions as low as £50 or as high as £150 or more. This will vary depending on several factors, which we will look at here.

Factors That Influence the Cost of Hypnotherapy

Location

Prices can vary widely depending on location. As you might expect, in major cities, costs can skyrocket (for example, in London, a session can cost from £90 to £160 or more). In less affluent areas you can expect to pay lower fees, but how much less will also depend on these other factors...

Therapist Experience & Qualifications

A Hypnotherapist's experience will often factor in to their fees. For example, newly qualified Hypnotherapists often charge less (£50 - £70 per session), while highly experienced and specialised therapists may charge upwards of £100 - £150 per session.

As well as their experience, another thing to take into account are their qualifications. Now, your Hypnotherapist doesn't need to have a PhD, but they should have qualifications showing that they are competent and well trained in Hypnotherapy!

This is very important, as within in the UK, Hypnotherapy is an unregulated profession. This means that ANYONE can call themselves a Hypnotherapist, even if they have only taken a 2-hour online course or read a book about it! I don't know about you, but I'd certainly want my Hypnotherapist to have more credentials behind them than a 2-hour course! I'd also like my therapist to have a strong interest in Psychology, and be doing regular training to keep up to date with the latest research.

Session Type

Something else that will affect the price will be the type of session. This can include whether it is conducted online or in-person - online sessions will often have less costs involved, so are normally lower than in-person sessions. You will also pay more for a therapist who specialises in certain areas and for specialist sessions (e.g. smoking cessation).

There can be other factors affecting the price, but these are the most common and influential things to consider.

Why is hypnotherapy so expensive?

Now, you might be sitting there thinking "WHY IS HYPNOTHERAPY SO EXPENSIVE?!"

I'll be honest with you, I felt exactly the same way before getting into the profession myself! As I mentioned previously, the average cost of Hypnotherapy in the UK is £80 per session, and you'll find sessions for as low as £50 or as high as £150 or more.

So, let's break down why Hypnotherapy is so expensive...

1. Professional Training & Continued Development

Becoming a qualified and accredited hypnotherapist requires a significant financial and time commitment. Initial diploma courses can cost anywhere from £2,500 to £5,000 or more and require hundreds of hours of classroom learning, self-study, and practical work.

However, the investment doesn't stop there. Professional hypnotherapists have ongoing expenses to maintain a high standard of practice:

  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD): Therapists must regularly invest in new courses and training to stay current with the latest research and techniques. This is a necessary requirement for all Hypnotherapy professional bodies (which your Hypnotherapist should be in!) - normally it's 21 hours or so of CPD per year, but this can vary depending on the organisation.

  • Professional Supervision: Hypnotherapists pay for ongoing supervision with a senior practitioner to ensure their work is ethical, safe, and effective. This is another necessary requirement for all professional Hypnotherapy bodies - normally it's a minimum of 6 hours per year, but again, this can vary depending on the organisation.

  • Professional Membership & Insurance: There are annual fees for membership to accredited bodies: Your Hypnotherapist should be in at least one professional Hypnotherapy body! There are many different ones, but some of those to look for include the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), the Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (AFSFH) and the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR).

Your Hypnotherapist should also have insurance to cover their practice! This should include Professional Indemnity and Public Liability insurance - this is a non-negotiable requirement for membership in all major professional bodies, such as those we've mentioned.

2. Business & Operational Costs

A private hypnotherapy practice has many hidden costs that a client doesn't see. These are all factored into the price of a session:

  • Administration: Time spent on client enquiries, scheduling, invoicing, and writing personalised session notes.

  • Rent & Equipment: The cost of renting a professional therapy room, website maintenance, booking software, and other business tools.

  • Marketing & Accounting: Expenses for reaching new clients, professional branding, and managing business finances.

3. Value & Results-Driven Outcomes

Ultimately, the price reflects the value that the client receives. Unlike some forms of therapy that can last for months or even years, hypnotherapy is often a fast and focused intervention. It aims to create significant, long-lasting change in a relatively short period of time.

So, while it can be tempting to just go with the cheapest Hypnotherapist you come across, really take the time to think about whether that is the right option for you.

Normally, the best therapist for you will not be the cheapest!

Think about all the things you own or things you invest in - how many of those things are the cheapest possible option? For example, your car or home. Why didn't you go for the cheapest, and what did paying extra do for you? I don't have an answer for you... everyone has their own reasons, but they're good questions to ponder on.

The cost is an investment in your well-being and a commitment to solving the problem, leading to a profound shift in mindset and behaviour that can positively impact every area of your life.

What is included in the price?

To give you an idea of what you can expect, I'll let you know what's included in my practice. First of all, I offer a FREE initial consultation. You'll see that some people charge for this. This session is an excellent opportunity to make sure that the therapist is right for you, and vice versa! Included in the price, you'll also receive Hypnotherapy soundtracks and other relevant resources that you can download and use at home. Then, obviously, there's the 5-sessions where you'll work with me to resolve your presenting issues.

Are there any hidden fees?

Again, I can't talk for all other Hypnotherapists, but I myself believe that EVERYTHING should be included in the price. The last thing I would want is to pay a good amount of money for something and then find out that there are extras I hadn't planned for... So, make sure that you're getting everything you expect for the money you're paying. Don't be afraid to ask the question if you're unsure.
