Hypnotherapy for Phobias

Updated: Jun 1, 2022

Do you have any phobias?

Everyone gets scared in certain situations, but a phobia is when you have an intense fear towards something, causing severe anxiety and possibly panic attacks.

It is possible to have a phobia about absolutely anything. Phobias come in all shapes and sizes. Some can seem strange to others but to the person suffering they are very real.

Some of the most common ones that we see in the practice include:

· Phobia of needles

· Phobia of heights

· Phobia of flying

· Phobia of snakes

· Phobia of spiders

· Phobia of insects

· Phobia of dogs

· Phobia of driving

Phobias are particularly troublesome when they are related to an object or situation that we encounter many times a day. Often, people find their lives are totally restricted or altered by a phobia. For example, someone with a phobia of dogs may have to change their route home to avoid seeing any dogs running loose in the park.

How are phobias created?

Phobias are created and a negative template is created within our subconscious mind. Phobias rely on a high state of anxiety to thrive in their hosts – if you take away some of the associated anxiety, it can be much easier to deal with the phobia. Some people will feel symptoms of high anxiety when they come into contact with their phobia, for others it may only take thinking about it.

Phobias can be created due to a number of different reasons, for example:

- A particularly traumatic event (e.g. you were bitten by an aggressive dog when a child, so you develop a phobia of all dogs)

- A learned response that you developed from someone else (e.g. your grandmother used to take you out in the car, and was a very nervous driver, so you picked up a phobia of driving)

- Genetics could also play a part – you may have an increased tendency towards certain states, such as anxiety

Phobias can be resolved - In hypnotherapy, we use trance to resolve the phobia, using techniques to allow people to disassociate with it, making it much easier to deal with it in the future.

Hypnosis for Phobias – Different Types of Phobia

There are several types of phobias that hypnosis can help with. These include:

- Specific Phobias – Otherwise known as ‘simple phobias’. Related to a specific object, animal, situation or activity. E.g. certain animals such as a phobia of snakes.

- Complex Phobias – These can be related to common activities and have a large impact on our life. E.g. A phobia of being in a crowded place/ social anxiety disorder.

How can hypnotherapy help Phobias?

As phobias are rooted within our subconscious mind, it can be very hard to access and alter them in our everyday life. During hypnosis you will enter a very relaxed trance state, gradually gaining access to our subconscious mind. We will then work on changing this phobia template from something that creates a huge amount of fear to something that we can deal with. We will use visual imagery to confront our fear in a safe, calm space, with total control on the speed and extent to which we face it. Once we have confronted our fear we will work on producing a new template, one which we can take forward with us in life, allowing us to take control of our phobia once and for all.

What our previous clients with phobias have said:

"George is amazing. I have always lived with a deep set phobia which controlled so much of my life. After having a child I decided I needed help to overcome it, I was sceptical. I was never able to even say the word without having physical affects but today, after 3 sessions with George I touched my phobia. Can’t thank him enough." - Alex A

"George made me feel at ease and I've really enjoyed our hypnotherapy sessions together. I've seen some improvement so far in one of the phobias I'm seeing him for and I've had no adverse affects. Still one more session to go for the other phobia." - Kara N
