Something I often get asked is how Hypnotherapy differs from other types of therapies, such as CBT and counselling.

First of all, let me say that I think all of the therapies I discuss are useful and can be right for different people. Just as we all like different foods, sports and clothing, it's the same with therapy - some people will prefer Hypnotherapy, whereas others may prefer CBT, counselling or another type of therapy.

There is no right or wrong... an analogy I like to use is keeping fit. Some people like to keep fit by going for a run. Others like to go for a swim or a cycle. Some like to hit a punch bag. Without going into the ins and outs of which is more effective for burning calories (I'm a Hypnotherapist, not a personal trainer!), they can all achieve the desired outcome in keeping us fit. It's the same with therapy... different routes can lead to a very similar result (whether that's increased confidence, reduced anxiety, better mental health or something else).

In this blog post, I will break down some of the differences between the therapies so you can decide which approach is best for you.

It can be challenging to understand the types of therapy and how they differ.

Hypnotherapy vs other therapies: How does hypnotherapy compare to traditional therapies like CBT, counselling etc?

Hypnotherapy vs other therapies... how does it compare?!

Hypnotherapy is a type of therapy that is very different from traditional approaches like counselling or CBT. While all therapies aim to help you improve your mental well-being, they work in different ways:

  • Traditional Therapy (Counselling, CBT, etc.): This is often focused on the conscious mind. You talk through your issues, analyse your thoughts and behaviours, and use logic and reasoning to find new strategies. This approach is powerful and effective for gaining insight and developing coping skills.

  • Hypnotherapy: This does work with the conscious mind (when using solution-focused questions etc at the start of the session) but focuses much more on the subconscious mind. By using a state of deep relaxation and focused attention, it bypasses the critical, analytical part of your brain. This allows for a more direct route to updating the beliefs and emotional responses that are driving your issues.

Think of it this way: Traditional therapy is like learning to edit a document, while hypnotherapy is like updating the software that runs the entire computer. The two approaches are often complementary, and hypnotherapy can accelerate the positive changes you might be working on with other therapies.

Is hypnotherapy better than medication for anxiety/ depression/ insomnia?

This is a common and important question, but it's crucial to understand that hypnotherapy is not a replacement for medication, and you should always discuss this with your Doctor or another qualified medical professional.

  • Medication works by altering the chemical balance in your brain to manage symptoms. It can be a vital tool for helping you function and is sometimes life-saving.

  • Hypnotherapy works to address the root cause of the emotional response in your subconscious mind. It can help you build new, healthy patterns of thought and behaviour.

Neither is inherently "better" than the other; they are simply different tools for different jobs. For some people, hypnotherapy can be a powerful standalone solution. For others, it can be a highly effective complementary therapy that helps them manage symptoms while also being on medication. The best choice is a personal decision made in consultation with your GP or a medical professional.

What's the difference between hypnotherapy and meditation?

While both practices involve deep relaxation and focused attention, they have very different goals.

  • Meditation is a practice of mindfulness and non-judgmental observation. The goal is to simply observe your thoughts and feelings without trying to change them. It's a journey with no specific destination.

  • Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic process with a specific goal in mind. The hypnotherapist guides you with positive suggestions to achieve a desired outcome, such as reducing anxiety or boosting confidence. It's a guided journey with a specific destination.

So, while both may feel relaxing, the key difference is the intention. Meditation is about being present, while hypnotherapy is about creating a specific, lasting change.

Group Hypnotherapy v Individual Sessions - Pros and Cons

The choice between group and individual sessions often comes down to your personal preferences, goals, and budget.

  • Individual Sessions

    • Pros: Highly personalised and private. The entire session is tailored to your unique situation and goals.

    • Cons: More expensive due to the one-on-one attention.

  • Group Sessions

    • Pros: More affordable. You get to feel a sense of community and connection by sharing the experience with others.

    • Cons: Not as personalised. The session is designed for a general issue, so it may not address the nuances of your specific problem.

Group sessions can be effective for common struggles, such as general stress management and boosting confidence. However, if you are looking for help with a specific issue, individual sessions are likely to be much more effective for you.
